Journal #10: Nonverbal Behaviors
Although all three prompts interested me, I chose the first since I have less to say about it and I feel really terrible for subjecting you to last week's long chunk of text. In terms of how I present myself physically, it definitely differs depending on who I am interacting with.
Normally, I'll wear black pants that are a tad too big, a plain shirt, and a sweatshirt, often also oversized. Even though I do not intend it as such, it implies to the people around me that I prioritize comfort over style and am not very particular about my clothing. I tend to re-wear outfits frequently, even in the same week, which does not help that assumption.
In reality, I am actually very particular when it comes to my clothes. I have certain combinations that I really enjoy, hence why I wear them frequently. My clothes are not oversized for comfort, but rather because I despise the feeling of skin-tight clothing. I always wear black pants because the texture of jeans bothers me. Deep down, there are reasons why I dress the way I do, but to other people, it may appear as laziness or make me seem like someone who does not pay attention to her appearance.
I do also, also have plenty of shirts that may have a logo for a game or a show I enjoy, but I would not be caught dead wearing those in public. After all, what if someone despises that piece of media and sees me in public, then they tell someone else, and my peers start talking about me behind my back? What if someone asks about my shirt and I have to awkwardly explain it to them? My anxious personality does not allow me to do things like that, even though the whole purpose of owning those shirts is to wear them.
One aspect of my attire that I do enjoy customizing is my socks. While the rest of my accessories are basic (for example, I wear the same hoop earrings in both of my ear piercings and sport some rather lackluster brown glasses), I find that socks are something that don't draw too much attention but can be a fun conversation starter.
By far my favorite pair of goofy socks is the goose socks that my friend Fay gave me years ago for my birthday. I cannot even send a photo of the actual socks as I wear them, because at this point, they're more hole than sock. Still, I adore them, even if they aren't as bold as some of my other pairs. One of my favorite things to do whilst wearing them is compliment someone else's socks, because they then look at mine, where I can reveal that they are not mere white socks like they think.
